The Japanese American Veterans Association announced its annual scholarship award program for 2015.
The scholarships were established to benefit a range of graduating high school seniors, advanced undergraduate students, and post graduate and professional education students.
The scholarships include the $5,000 memorial scholarship honoring Sen. Daniel K. Inouye’s iconic career of military and civilian public service; the $3,000 Founders Scholarship named for JAVA’s founder, the late Army Reserve Col. Phil Ishio and his son, Douglas, as well as other JAVA memorial scholarships each in the amount of $1,500.
Application instructions, forms and other details will be posted on the JAVA website by March 23. The final date for receiving applications will be May 15.
The eligibility criteria include descendants of those who served in the 100th Battalion, the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, the Military Intelligence Service, as well as descendants of World War II Nisei soldiers from other units. In the case only of the Inouye scholarship, applications also will be accepted from any past or present member of Hawaii’s 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry. A current war veteran member of JAVA whose membership began at least one year prior to April 1, 2014, or his or her child also may be eligible.
Detailed criteria information will be posted with instructions later this month on the JAVA website, www.javadc.org, in JAVA’s weekly news bulletin, the RoundRobin, and in the Advocate.
As in the past, favorable consideration will be given to eligible applicants who demonstrate their lifelong commitment to public and uniformed service leadership for the nation, such as participating in military commissioning programs while in college.
The names of the recipients of the Inouye, Ishio and the Memorial scholarship awards will be announced at the annual JAVA scholarship luncheon in June.
